The English county of Gloucestershire sits in the south west of the country and covers just over a thousand square miles. It comprises three areas: The Royal Forest of Dean, The Cotswolds and The Severn Vale. Gloucestershire also contains the country's largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Known historically as a rural county it has embraced farming, horticulture and forestry. With the onset of the industrial revolution it was well placed to take advantage of the wool trade. The largest towns are Cheltenham and Gloucester and the county has excellent links to other parts of the country via the motorway network.
